Couture Vs Lesnar
The big rumour doing the rounds is that former pro wrestler turned MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter Brock Lesnar and former five time UFC champion Randy Couture are in serious negotiations to fight in November.
This is huge news to any fan of MMA!!
Couture quit as UFC heavyweight champion last year, Sonny Bill Williams style, and walked out on a contract with two fights left on it. Since then it has been a legal bitch slap-a-thon with Couture sooking about not getting enough money and the UFC wondering why the sudden change of heart after signing a contract. Couture also wants to fight Russian champion Fedor Emelianenko (undefeated since 2000) who the UFC have had no success signing.
In the mean time the UFC has signed MMA newcomer Brock Lesnar who has attracted huge interest due to his following from his pro wrestling days where he had previously achieved the title of WWE Champion. Yes I know that a WWE champion doesn’t hold much stock in the world of ‘real’ fighting but it does hold stock with millions of pro wrestling fans around the world. This coupled with the fact the Lesnar totally dominated his much more experienced, credentialed and respected opponent Heath Herring at UFC87 leads me to believe that Randy is warming to a UFC return.
With the two fights that Couture still has left on his contract he may be trying to convince the UFC to let him out of this contract if he is willing to fight Lesnar in one last UFC fight. This would be a huge numbers PPV and could possibly break all previous PPV records, giving Couture and the UFC a huge pay day and allowing him to pursue Emelianenko in any organization.
Either way, at 45 years of age Couture had better start considering negotiation rather than legal options soon, father time waits for no one.
