My Greatest Win – Dr Turf
What was your greatest win?
My best winning bet was backing Sirmione at 80/1 in the 2008 McKinnon Stakes.
Any near misses?
The one that missed was backing Brad Hughes to win the Australian Masters in 2004 at 100/1. He led by one coming to the 18th and double bogeyed it. He only missed the fairway by four feet and the shrub he landed in has since been removed.
Do you have any punting theories?
Never back short favourites in the AFL at the line.
Do you have any trainers that you follow religiously?
The Robert Smerdon stable is good to follow. When they’re backed they’re very hard to beat.
Who is the best horse you’ve ever seen?
The best horse may have been Dulcify but we’ll never know. My favourite horse is the last winner I backed.
Do you prefer a bold front running horse or a backmarker that flashes home?
Always a front runner. Australian race tracks are usually suited to on-pacers. Even when there is a run on bias, back markers still require a lot of pace.
Do you own horses?
I’ve owned many, none to flashy. I previously owned a multiple city winner called Racy Dancer but he gave up trying so I sold him. I went to a track called Gordonvale south of Cairns a year or two later and there he was in the race book, running in the Gordonvale Cup.
I went round to the stalls to see my old horse and the trainer was saddling him up. I introduced myself as the previous owner and without turning round he said, “Nice fucking skunk you sold me”. It ran seventh in a field of eight.
What is your most memorable moment on a racetrack?
One of my most memorable moments on the racetrack was at the Derby four years ago. I was asked my Derby tip by Peter Costello and then 30 seconds later by someone who would traditionally have been called a colourful racing identity.
My first Melbourne Cup bet was when I was a kid in 1970 and I asked some old bastard at Flemington to put $5 each was on a Kiwi called Vansittart for me. He took my $10 and I’ve never seen him since. The horse ran second but I did my money cold.
Is there a horse you think might have a big year in 2010?
I think So You Think could be anything. He won the Cox Plate and was the runner up in the Emirates on raw ability.
