Richard Callendar – His Greatest Win

Published by SJ under General

What is your best winning bet?

Most families played Scrabble, Monopoly or Snakes and Ladders but we didn’t/ Dad would photo copy and old form guide and get an old race meeting out on VHS and he’d play bookmaker while my three brothers and I would bet. There was one race when I remembered the winner.

I didn’t remember much at school but when it comes to racehorses and sport I had a good memory. Dad put up 5/1 and I had a thousand eachway. I was a lot younger so forgive me for betting eachway. We only started with ten thousand so it was a good bet. Dad tried to bait me and turned the horse Sunalong Lass out to 7/1. My brothers didn’t have faith and backed a few other runners while I doubled up.

Dad then twisted his bookie board out to 10/1 for Sunalong Lass and I didn’t flinch; two more turns and I had used all my money, I had $5000 eachway. My brothers were laughing but when Scott Thurlow and Sunalong Lass sailed down the outside to victory there eyes almost popped out of their heads. It’s become folk lore in our family.

What is your golden rule of punting?

My golden rule is to back as many winners as I can. I have plenty of rules when punting, but like a true punter when you are in the thick of the action you throw them out the window along with your brain and just start praying for some help from above. There is no thrill like punting and non-punters just don’t understand that.

Do you have any theories, like never backing a horse going from a maiden to a class 1, or always backing the footy team with the best halves?

A lot of older blokes have methods they follow but I do the form for each individual race. I start with a clean sheet. The pace of the race is the most important think when doing the form. Working out how the race will be run takes you a long way to backing a winner.

Who is the best jockey you’ve ever seen?

There is not much between Nash Rawiller and Mick Dittman. Both of them are able to pick their horses up with their strength when they are in trouble and get them home first. Nash and Mick are very strong but they also have the great ability to read a race and predict what is going to happen in a furlong’s time. With me being in Sydney it’s hard to compare the jockeys from interstate, but it’s fair to say I wouldn’t mind Damien Oliver on any of my horses.

What is your most memorable moment on a racetrack?

It was at Rosehill but I am not sure whether it was Saturday June 3rd 2000 or the following day.

On Saturday June 3 2000 in the last race Dean Greville steamed down the outside aboard Catapult for Kim Moore (now Waugh) to win by 3.3 lengths at 10/1. I was out of play and I was getting married the next day. I had my last $62 on him. If he had got beat I would have snipped my dad so we could have a honeymoon.

I was married to my lovely wife the next day in front of the winning post at Rosehill with the $600 to spend on our honeymoon. God bless Catapult!

Is there a horse or horses you think might have a big spring?

Parables. She is the nest superstar filly. She can run sectionals that others only dream, of. Anything up to a mile and she will take plenty of beating.

Cheers to Bill Richmond and sportingbet.com.au

Clive Palmer cops a pizzling

Published by SJ under General

I am not one that usually makes fat jokes for obvious reasons. Last night Clive Palmer appeared on ABC’s political show Q and A and boy he copped an absolute pizzling.

Some examples

Gavin_Rees Where can I buy the “Clive Palmer’s laboured
breathing” #qanda soundtrack album?

ryan_1890 For the sake of future of the mining industry Clive
Palmer should get lap band, if he doesn’t it could spell death of him & mining #qanda

Penny_Wong At least Clive Palmer hasn’t insisted on having
Princess Leia on a chain sitting in front of him. #qanda

Antibolt: #ausvotes Clive Palmer is not a self indulgent greedy fat pig…you only have to look at him to see that. #auspol #qanda

Penny_Wong Office staff are taking bets on whether Tanya or Clive will give birth first. #qanda

Typingmonkey When people call Clive Palmer fat, it’s not personal; it’s just that you can’t say “fat c***” on TV #qanda

nickspurway Thankyou #qanda. Now quick, Clive Palmer needs
to get back onto his KFC bucket. He looks pale and sheeny.

PDidzzy Let’s skip #lateline and just watch the crane remove Clive
Palmer #qanda

danmilian I had to change the aspect ratio on my TV to fit Clive
Palmer in. #qanda

rylo93 Can anyone else hear Clive Palmer’s heavy breathing? I
thought it was a stalker at my door but it’s just #qanda

The only intelligent tweet amongst them….

arwon I just noticed Clive Palmer is really fat. There MUST be a
comedic angle. Help me out? #qanda

I find it ironic that racism is so frowned upon by society yet other people can be treated as above. Sure racism is wrong but I can’t understand how the above is acceptable. I am sure 60 minutes will have an in depth report discussing the matter next week…. no wait… I have just heard it has been bumped for yet another anorexia sob story. It makes me sick… no wait

2010 NRL Tipping compeition results

Published by SJ under General

The $50 cash prize goes to ME! Yes that is right, I am the best tipper in the land! Well maybe not the land but I am pretty awesome with a placing of 187 out of 19,791 tippers in the Optusnet footy tipping comp. In lieu of a payout of $50 to a tipper I have made a $50 donation to George Costanza’s Human Fund which I trust satisfies all the pundits out their.

Big cheers goes out to Kell, Tara and Woody who put up a strong fight for second.

I also look forward to picking up $50 from Meggaman who could not quite cut the mustard against the master.

As stated I am a little disappointed with the performance of the Bronco’s so am forced to make a decision to support another team.

I have decided the Titans are looking good and am backing them in. Sporting bet.com.au have them at $7.50 which I reckon is very juicy, very juicy indeed.

Revenge of the phone company

Published by SJ under General

I recently sold my Telstra shares and they repay me with slow internet from hell. To be fair they did warn me that they were going to slow my internet down when I had 5 gig of data left for the month. When I received this email I thought ok, time to pull up on the internet usage, but alas 4 days later somehow I have blown through the 5 gig like it was nothing. Bull shit! Tesltra you are screwing with me I barely downloaded an email and it is gone. You are full of crap and I am leaving you!

In light of my internetless weekend (and coming weekend because I am only halfway through the freaking month!) I watched a few movies/shows I had on Foxtel (yes another Telstra product). I now list them so you can save yourself some time.

Righteous Kill
Staring De Niro and Pacino I expected a lot but was VERY disappointed. What a piece of crap. I have had drives to the supermarket with more interesting plots and the twist…. WHAT TWIST if it was any more obvious what was going to happen 15 minutes into the movie it could have passed as a romance-less Mills and Boon novel.

12 Rat hairs from me

The men who stare at goats
I had been wanting to get an on demand movie (from Foxtel) for some time and finally decided this movie would get my $6. I love George Clooney and indeed would consider boofing him but this was a dog turd from death. Maybe I missed some crucial plot line but this appeared to be a movie made just for the sake of it. Had I known up front the worlds most annoying actor Jeff Bridges was in it I probably would have given it a miss but the faith I had in Clooney, Spacey and to a lesser extent Ewan McGregor gave me confidence it would be ok.

Its review lists it as a slapstick comedy war film. I review it as 17 rat hairs stuck together inside a bit of ear wax.

Brisbane Broncos
I am staggered Lockyer didn’t play and even more staggered now to hear he wanted to play and the coach would not let him. Most staggering of all is talk that Ricky Stuart could be the new Broncos coach. Mark my words, if Stuart coaches my team they lose me. I would rather support Manly.
