GoodFellas

Published by SJ under General

I received a rare treat on the weekend with an opportunity to watch the movie GoodFellas in HD through Foxtel. Perhaps none of you know the movie GoodFellas so I should probably explain a little.

The film revolves around Henry Hill, a real life character and gangster in the 60′s and 70′s. Ray Liotta (on the right) plays the role and did a wonderful job. As you will see Joe Pesci (left) also guest stars in the movie and won an Oscar for his supporting role of Tommy DeVito a nutcase gangster who bought both the sizzle and the steak.

The plot basically follows Henry Hill’s life as a gangster from his early years and through to some of America’s most famous crimes. His crimes, his friends, his family and ‘associates’ are the main ingredients and it is a fascinating story from start to finish based loosely around real events.

Martin Scorsese is on of my favourite directors and I think this was the movie in which I really came to know his work and have loved it since. The sets are great and the backing music track is stupendous. One thing that when you have watched it a couple of times can be confusing is the way the main character narrates the movie, but sometimes doesn’t seem to know what happens next, which is odd if you think about it. But you don’t even notice it as the story and scenes keeps you engrossed the whole way.

Another part of this movie I love is Robert De Niro who plays a role as Jimmy ‘The Gent’ Conway. Almost any movie with the involvement of De Niro is enough to get me through the gates but he out does himself in this role.

In particular I love this scene in the movie where we have the backing opening riff of ‘Sunshine of you love’ playing over the brooding and smoking Jimmy the Gent considering his next move. Brilliant!

In the end the movie finishes but I still wanted more.

It is not for the faint hearted but if you can live with a little bit of blood but enjoy a great story I strongly suggest you get out and get a copy!

War Machine is out of Jail

Published by SJ under General

Former UFC fighter and porn star (former?) War Machine (name legally changed) wrote his latest blog post before being released from prison after one year inside.

It has been interesting to read his posts over the passed 12 months. His attitude seems to have actually improved (on the blog anyway) so perhaps if he can stay focused he might make it back into the Octagon. Well in a ring at least.

Not sure why I am putting this up here. I guess I just found it interesting to read something from someone just getting out of jail as I have not had any experience in this area with friends or family.

One more week and I’m outta here! It’s a trip, I can’t believe I’ve been in jail for a YEAR! It’s gonna be so nice to eat REAL food and train for REAL. I just hope that my probation officer isn’t too much of an a$$hole. I don’t plan to and know I won’t cause any problems for him/her, I’m just gonna do what needs to be done. I don’t think it should be a problem though. I don’t do any drugs, so piss testing is nothing for me, I’m not in a gang & I have a job/career so I should be considered a low maintenance/easy case to manage for them. Say some prayers/send some energy so that I get a decent probation officer.

Anyway, I learned a lot this year: who my REAL friends are, how great my wife really is, how much I really LOVE MMA, I learned that all cops aren’t the devil and in fact, are good guys just making a $, learned that the U.S.A.’s criminal justice system is 100 times more f@cked up than I ever imagined, and I read more than 60 books and got insight into all kinds of different shit. Notice that I did NOT learn that what I did that night in the bar was “wrong.” I stand by my actions to this day and believe that EVERY human has the right to defend themselves or others, if they believe there is a threat to their safety. I’m not a “criminal,” I don’t rob and steal, and I don’t sell dope to kids… Humans have a “fight or flight” mechanism built into them and in a split second decision, where my best buddy got into a fight out of the blue, and I saw 2 guys running to jump in, my instincts had me attempt to defend him and there was no way for me to discern that one happened to be a bouncer and he got hit. So what I really “learned” about that night and about other times I’ve gotten into street fights, and how to avoid them and avoid trouble in the future is simply: DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN SITUATIONS/PLACES WHERE FIGHTS CAN HAPPEN. If a drug addict wants to stay clean, he needs to not be around people or places where drugs are, SIMPLE SOLUTION. My instinct to fight father than flee would have helped my survival in past ages, however in this age, it only puts me in jail. Like I’ve always said, “I don’t get in fights at the grocery store.” So I’m confident, in fact I KNOW, if I avoid bars/clubs/parties, I will NEVER be put in a situation again that will require the activation of my “fight or flight” instinct. That is the main lesson I have learned. If you have a problem, alcohol, drugs, gangs, violence, WHATEVER, and you TRULY want to STOP, you MUST eliminate EVERYTHING (friends, spouses, lifestyle) that brings your problem into being. I hope that some of you reading this that have a problem, and want to avoid America’s inhumane system of punishment, will learn from MY LOSS OF A YEAR OF LIFE and prevent yourself from the same or worse. This will be my LAST blog from jail, the next time you hear from me I’ll be a free man again.

I want to thank all of you fans that have helped make this year so much better with your constant e-mails of support, money, gift packs, and books. It means a lot to me and I feel blessed to have had so much support.

Increase alcohol prices at your peril

Published by SJ under General

There are starting to be a few news reports about the ‘Alcohol Advisory Group’ and the ‘The National Alliance for Action on Alcohol’ groups who are pushing for change in our society.

In essence they are going to push for an increase in the price of alcoholic drinks on the premise that it will reduce alcohol consumption.

From News.com.au

“If a pricing strategy is to be used to reduce the hazardous consumption and harm – and it is clear that price is the most effective and cost-effective measure we can use – a comprehensive approach is preferable,” the groups wrote in an article published by the Medical Journal of Australia.

“It should cover all products and aim to reduce the ability of industry to promote cheaper alternatives.

“This should include a comprehensive graduated volumetric taxation system that covers all types of alcoholic beverages and is informed by the relationship between consumption of these products and consequent harm.

“Setting a minimum price per standard drink would curtail the alcohol industry’s ability to discount prices to increase sales and to shift consumers to cheaper alternatives.”

Really?……… really?……….. really?

Well I am amazed, these two groups have stated that if they make a product more expensive then less people will consume it.

If it wasn’t so serious I would actually laugh at this stuff but this is indeed very serious. Both the ‘Alcohol Advisory Group’ and the ‘The National Alliance for Action on Alcohol’ are made up BS. If anyone out there can actually find any evidence identifying any members of these groups please feel free to present it here….. or anywhere for that matter.

This is a crock of crap. We are being told by groups that have no visible representatives that laws pertaining to my everyday life need to be adjusted. To this I say bullocks! To this you should all say BULLOCKS

Who the hell are these people???? TELL ME!!!!

Who are the ‘Alcohol Advisory Group’ and the ‘The National Alliance for Action on Alcohol’

Maybe their identity remains secret for a reason? Probably smart.

That is OK, BUT let word go fourth from this time. Anyone (I mean ANYONE!!!!) who wants, plots or moves to increase the price of alcohol faces SEVERE penalties. I cannot make this any clearer.

You have been warned. WE WILL NOT TAKE IT!!!
