Black Caviar: A Gamble to far
I am not sure how true rumors are that Black Caviar’s trainers and connections are considering a tilt at the Cox plate this year but it is something that has been tried and failed with successful sprinters in the past. Worse than failing in the race is failing to return to successful form after such an attempt.
Miss Finland was a horse that did well on the short sprint races and once pushed up in distance ended up in the midfield and struggling. Acknowledged that she did win the Oaks but I think the pressure of a Cox plate was just to much.
Weekend Hussler another terrific sprinter that seemed to be ruined by the attempted stretch in distance. Looking back now I am sure the owners of the Hussler are most annoyed with their dalliance.
I know some horses can do it and others can’t, it just seems like such a gamble to attempt a change in distance when you have a winning formula and so many other races (I refer to overseas races) that you could potentially seemingly effortlessly (get those three into you) win. Even former Cox Plate winning jockey Greg Childs suggests it may be a stretch.
Perhaps I am just a gutless wonder but if it ain’t broke… [insert something here].
