Air Conditioning
Part 1
I love my air conditioner. If you have ever lived in the tropics you will know the difference between a night with air conditioning and a night without it. Even in the sub tropics of Brisbane it is still advantageous to have air con. There are some people who think that it is bad for you or that it “doesn’t really do anything.” To them, I say, snap out of it! To those super smart engineers who invented air conditioning over 100 years ago I salute you!!
It is a shame that we can’t fool these fantasists who perpetuate the global warming swindle into believing that huge big air conditioners could solve the problem. Hang on, maybe they could be fooled, but to effectively tell a lie you must act as though you believe in it, this could be a stretch for me. I am calling on Russell ‘Maximus Decimus Meridius’ Crowe to lend his voice to my documentary called The Great Global Air Conditioning Challenge, or TGGACC for short. Any one interested in investing in this movie please leave a comment below with your bank account details.
Part 2
Why on earth on Saturday were we unable to find a pub in the whole of Brisbane that had decent air conditioning? The Fox at South Brisbane was absolutely ridiculous! The 40°C we were experiencing in outside ambient temperature was lower than inside the actual Pub Tab. When I asked old mate bar chick to pump up the air con she advised me that they were broken. Broken you say Fox? Well good luck for the rest of your business life because after a long period of awkward service, only one open TAB machine (even when you have two on site), lack of beer coasters and now air conditioners that have been broken for at least 12 months you can bash your bar up your clacker! It’s a shame that your good location and all the other possibilities are wrecked by a lack of interest or thought from your bar managers and staff.
Maybe the “bash it up your clacker” call is a bit early, being that the bar is in such a good location and has such possibilities, should we A) tell the proprietor of our thoughts in the hope that they make some minor improvements to rectify the situation B) vote with our feet and leave the bar stagnate due to the lack of our business, which I believe was reasonably significant; or C) continue to support the venue and put up with the problems?
Part 3
Another air conditioning thought, why don’t most public schools have air conditioning? Every other government building in the country has air conditioning except for schools. I don’t so much feel for the kids, it’s the teachers and various staff that are forced to endure summer surrounded by 35°C humid air and 30 stinking kids? I understand that many jobs don’t include air conditioning but in those instances where you are labouring or doing other outdoor type work, you would dress yourself with the expectation you will be sweating your ass off. If I were a teacher, it would be difficult to find clothing you can sweat in all day and still be presentable enough to meet little Johnny’s lawyer parents the next time he plays up.

Not sure I agree with you even contemplating becoming a school teacher….classes would involve BF2 warfare training, how to pick a horse from a form guide, and Buffetology 101. All valuable skills no doubt, but not enough to get by on.
Having never been to the fox it is hard to comment but here goes. If you really like the joint let them know but atleast tell someone who can make a difference, like the manager? Dont waste your time with the peoples who job is it already to make it a nice place to come – they obviously have little in the way of customer service skills. If you dont get a satisfactory response, there are plenty of other places to try – surely?
Aircon is great, I love it. In the home, in the car, in the office. The only downside is the power it needs to keep the place cool, but since I am of the energy wasters generation my care factor is low indeed, so keep those fossil fuels coming!
I feel for you Shirvy….Saturday was an awful day to be anywhere but in air con. Mercury hit 40 degrees and the humidity was a killer. I tucked myself away inside the aircon nicely and didn’t surface until late arvo.
We all know how on the hottest days of the year our cities suddenly run out of electricity, because every man and his dog turns their homes into igloos. Maybe there’s another NASM business venture in that for us?? Air con units that use less power? They’ve done it with light bulbs…why not air con units?
I saw on Top Gear last week where they ran a car on vegetable oil…seemed to work OK. Who wants to volunteer their air con unit for an experiment??
SJ, I think YOU should tell the proprietor of your thoughts in the hope that they make some minor improvements to rectify the situation otherwise YOU will be taking your business elsewhere.
Better still vote with your feet, as hell would have a better chance freezing over than you actually asking the Fox! Why are you so scared in asking????
Airconditioning can be bad for you. if you are going in and out of hot and cold environments constantley it can give you a cold pretty easily. I think the world would be in a much better position if there was not as much airconditioning. The power used to cool things would have a large impact on global warming.
I am all for the good old air con!!! Try working night shifts and then sleeping during the day without one! Not good for all involved, especially the poor patients who have to cope with a grumpy night nurse due to lack of sleep because of the heat!!!
Question for SJ; Why don’t you go to the gym & stop sitting at your computer all day running this pitiful website & you might lose weight & consequently you wouldn’t feel the heat as much you fat bevan?
Blowgirl, I would love to be nursed back to health by you. I have injured my abs from laughing so much at the rubbish that SJ & his crew come up with each day.
IASM. I am amazed that you continue to come to this site even though you seem to hate it and no one here seems to like your comments. Can you explain this to me?
Un air conditioned pubs. hmmmm not your most thought provoking article. it is good to have air conditioning in summer but also as good to have it in winter when you live in Canberra or another cold climate.
iasm…I am afraid I would delegate you to one of the junior wardsman…you would harass my nursing staff!
Aircon good, heat bad. I was fortunate enough to be in Victoria for Saturday so managed to avoid the nasty weather.
There are some public schools with aircon. I think these are schools where the P&C has put up money to install them and also for ongoing running/maintenance costs.
It’s generally recognised by other businesses that uncomfortable workers don’t work well, and the same will hold for teachers and students. So it would seem a surefire way to boost productivity (learning/grades, whatever) and worth the expense.
While we’re at it, why not pay teachers for the hours they’re expected to be at work? Everyone else gets paid for staff meetings, client visits, etc either through decent salary or being paid for the hours. Sure the holidays are good but it doesn’t cancel out.
Disclaimer: Mrs Rabbit is a teacher.
Blowgirl, are you a bevchick?
SJ, lift your game with respect to topics for discussion or be prepared for this site to collapse, you bevan!
I don’t think little Johnny’s lawyer parents would send little Johnny to a public school without air con. Do you?
Hey IASM, how about you vote with your feet instead of putting them in your mouth over and over again, and leave? Surely you feel your intelligence would be better spent counting the things you love about yourself?
Showbag is throwing his empty threats around again. Better watch out Shirvy I wouldn’t want something as horrific as that chasing me…..again
Mrs Rabbit has opened a can of worms. I would love to have 13 weeks ayear holidays and have teaching hours of 9 – 3.
Catechuchu – teachers would love that too. If you’re convinced that’s what it is, it’s not that hard (just a few years of uni) to become a teacher. Go ahead, easy street awaits!
