HD DVD v Blue-Ray v next?

Published by SJ at 5:40 am under General

It seems that in the above mentioned battle for supremacy Blue-Ray has won by TKO in the 3rd round with Toshiba’s HD DVD refusing to come out for the fourth. You ok HD DVD? You ok mate?

I am a fan of technology; I am just not a fan of paying for it over and over. Man it would piss me off if I had invested the couple of thousand to pony up for the HD DVD technology and now face a dead end product. That’s it, no more movies or blank media will be released in the format that you whole-heartedly supported & believed in like it were your own footy team. Good bye South HD DVD Sydney, even Russell can’t save you.

The development of new ‘media’ never seems to end. They have gone from VHS to Stereo VHS to VCD to DVD to Dual Layer DVD to HD DVD or Blue-Ray. In the mean time you may have gone from CRT TV to Flat Screen CRT to Wide Screen CRT to Plasma TV to LCD TV. Plus with all that you have had to go from free to air TV with the option of subscription TV to Digital TV and an option to upgrade to High Def or HD or Digital subscription TV with iQ.

After all of this you have successfully paid out a small fortune to the ‘media’ makers of the world who in turn invest some of these returns on inventing new special features or improvements that you, the good little consumer, will need to purchase to make sure you are getting the best picture possible and keep up with the Jones’s.

Its true though, I get given crap about the 68cm Sony Trinitron that I purchased 6 or 7 years ago that still seems to work fine. Its “so small” are some of the jibes I have received (yes, I refer only to the TV). Don’t get me wrong, I would love a huge 50 inch flat screen high def TV with Blue-Ray and HD feed from Foxtel, hell throw in a PS3 and I probably would spend even more time on my arse experiencing ‘media’. But I know all to well as soon as I have purchased these “babies” some punk will invent some new freakin feature that I would need to buy!

The next step is TV via the internet which is really going to open up some new channels, it is here now, but the quality will improve as internet speeds get better.

So come on, tell me some of your ‘tech’ purchases that were outdated in a matter of minutes?

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

Recently I purchased a sophisticated on-line-electro-modulating-dickhead-detector. Unfortunately it overloaded & blew up the moment Velcrap logged on!

You stole it Showbag. I’ll bet that’s why you can’t return it.

Or did you pick it up cheap in Singapore when your boat stopped over?

  4. A palm pilot before they added a mobile phone feature. $660 now worthless because every body wants one with a phone on it as well.

Yes, yes, yes I also was bitten by the pre-phone Palm Tungsten E. I still use it as it can do everything from word documents, spreadsheets PDFs, customer databases and media. I just can’t really do email or phone calls on it. I feel it can be better to keep these seperate because if you loose your Palm it can be costly.

I thought I was very clever buying a modern set of digital bathroom scales a few years ago……..the downside was that the maximum weight was 100kg. As you can imagine, they were worthless within a very short space of time.

Being a Webmaster with a detailed knowledge of the readers of this website rest assured, you were not the only reader here caught out with this one.

I think I have hit a new low,
I have just had to write a standard operating procedure on the correct way to unhitch a trailer off a vehicle. This is because one of the apprentices unhitched the trailer while all the weight was at the rear of the trailer causing it to tilt upwards and crush his hand under the tray of the Ute.
This rates up there with the one I wrote last month when one of the guys launched the work boat into the river without holding on to the bow line rope on the boat and someone had to swim out and retrieve the boat before it drifted down stream. (Did I mention that he did so fully clothed with safety boots on?).
And I thought electricians were smart!

sorry I know this is off topic but its certainly a tech problem.

I hope he was not to badly injured. Surely he and everyone from your workplace has learnt that lesson now and will never make the same mistake again? Maybe not!

Please publish the full instructions on this web page please. I feel some of the ‘people’ from the caravan park could learn a few things from this.

The internals of my computer, everytime I buy a new piece for ie graphics card, it is out of date from the purchase point to getting it fitted into my computer. At least it gives me something to do in my spare time, building out of date computers from all the spare parts I seem to have. Shirvo knows all about this, how comps do you have now?

A guy at work commented on this today. Then he said “Oh well, lucky I have both!”.

Thanks AJ…Thanks Mate!! Who else got bitten?

That is a good story but I was hoping you would relate your purchase of a no-name plasma a couple of years ago and the awsome warranty support you received.
