Kokoda Dunnies

Published by SJ at 10:42 am under General

If you want to make the trek up to PNG and have a crack at the Kokoda track then more power to you. But fair suck of the sav sir sooks-a-lot, you can’t expect for our government to provide you with toilets along the way. I must ask again, did we win the freaking Powerball draw last week or something? Surely there are more pressing issues that our money can be used to resolve other than providing drop dunnies for these tourists.

If you are that dead set keen on having a crack at Kokoda then I reckon you should get out in the boondoo and practice some squat turds before you go.

There is also some talk of installing bins along the way to stem the ever growing piles of rubbish. Surely if you are going up there carrying all your food you can make the effort to bring your rubbish back with you. I struggle with the mentality of people who think it is such an honour to make the trek of our war heroes and just leave there rubbish all over the shop.

It’s a place of respect not your lounge room you flag touting tourist and don’t even try and turn this on me niffers. If I were going to do this trek (yes highly unlikely) I would be sure to pay respect to the track and uphold the condition in which I found it, barring a few squat turds off in the boondoo along the way.

Kenny and his whole band of anti turd squatters can go to Dreamworld if they don’t like it. Their ideologies are very closely aligned, also Dreamworld has public toilets out their ying yangs.

Your up against it here attacking our war heroes is not a smart move. matches your name name I guess. I think its a great plan and gives the people of PNG somewhere to go also.

Rob B did you read the post. SJ is protecting the Kokoda and keeping as per the war heroes left it.

They shouldn’t have cleared up all the left over ammunition etc though….that has made the trek plain boring…….imaging the risk wondering off the track to lay some cable on an old grenaid or bomb……………….urgh urgh urgh kaboom!!!!!!!

For once SJ is making sense. I agree with your sentiments.

I walked the Kokoda Track last October, and the issue of toilets is becoming a greater concern because of the number of trekkers paying hommage to our brave soldiers who served in PNG keeping the Japanese from probable invasion of Australia.

There are a number of trekking companies (incl. ‘No Roads’ who I walked with) who are donating money for compostible toilets which will be placed in villages along the track, for use by the villagers and trekkers alike. This will be a major benefit to the environment and the health conditions in this beautiful part of the world.

The Governmnt should be applauded for a far-sighted view of a situation which could become untenable if nothing positive is initiated.

As for the ‘suggested’ idea of rubbish bins being introduced, I think that is a furphy! All the rubbish we generated was carried out by the trekkers or the porters, or composted by the villagers (who by the way supplied our fresh fruit and vegetables. The money paid to the villagers helps them in no small way as our tour company – and others too – helps with their income.
