Nadal and St Pierre take the crown

Published by SJ at 11:20 am under General

A new number 1 of world tennis was officially crowned this evening with Nadal taking Federer to task. I know Nadal has been number 1 for a while but after this performance his security in the top position was locked in Eddy.

What I couldn’t get over is the amount of balls this bloke will run down. He is like the freaking terminator with his relentless ability to get the bal back. At some points I am sure Federer would of thought he was in actual fact playing against a brick wall!

To his credit, Federer fought like a dog but he just seemed to come up with errors at the worst times. Some of his double faults were horrendous and his unforced errors in the final set had me giving myself uppercuts. I should point out at this stage that I had Federer as the last leg of a multi leg sports bet that would have paid nicely had the Swiss dud got up. Maybe ‘dud’ is a bit unfair but after costing me some cold hard cash it’s all I can feel. He obviously didn’t bring his knife with him to this battle.

At UFC 94 Georges ‘Rush’ St-Pierre dominated B J Penn in the most absolute way possible. I must also disclose that I had made a reasonable investment on B J Penn as well. After telling St-Pierre he was going to try and “kill him”, “make him tap”, “make him quite” and “knock him out” barley a whimper was heard as B J’s corner wouldn’t let him out for round five, how embarrassing! I have always wondered how a fighter feels the day after he loses a fight after talking it up something chronic. I suspect B J Penn would be best positioned to advise me of this but he won’t even front the media.

On a night where nearly all the fights went to the judges score card and there were a number of long grappling wars there was one shining KO highlight. Strangely it involved the fighters I thought may go the distance. Lyoto Machida taught Thiago Silva a valuable lesson right at the end of round 1 as you will see below.

Oh and Michael Clarke is still CRAP ….. just marginally less crap than Australia are at cricket.

I thaught it was a great game between the too. You are write about Nadals ability to chase down the balls absolutley stagering! That video doesnt work.

I think Jethro was going for a new record on the most spelling mistakes in a 2 line post.

Nadal was a little like our dear old friend Forrest Gump….he just kept running and running and then he ran some more. He was pulling of incredible shots and Federer couldn’t get anything past him.

Federer was so fatigued in the 5th set he struggled to even hit the ball in the court. Taking nothing away from Nadal, but he certainly didn’t ‘win’ the 5th set….Fed lost it.

BJ Penn – don’t talk up a fight that you’re going to kill someone and then walk into the ring looking like the Michelin Man!

Great match last night. Was a pretty late finish though, I reckon they should go back to afternoon finals. What do you think?

I forgot that UFC was on. I heard that it was going to be a big fight but it sounds like it might not have been as predicted.

    What about the Superbowl?

What a 24 hours of sports we have had. Nadal wins the tennis, Australia choke in the cricket (AGAIN) and the Steelers get home in the Superbowl. I really need to get some sleep.
I am not really a big fan of the men’s tennis as it can be quite predictable and one sided, however last nights match had everything. Although I was barracking for Federer to get the Grand Slam record, Nadal is a freak and deserved his victory AND WILL surpass them all. I predict the GRAND SLAM for Nadal in 2009.
Australia really need to have a long hard look at the selection of a few players in the crikcet. Time to sack Marsh, Warner, David Hussey and Cameron White. We need some youth and experience. Bring in Katich, Hodge and Carseldine. Why can McDonald make the test side as an all rounder and not the 50 over match?
What a great finish to the Superbowl, with the Steelers getting a touchdown in the final minutes. I don’t know how Holmes caught the ball and was able to land both feet in the field of play to score the final touchdown. Freakish stuff

    Do you miss me guys?
It has been an incredible experience over here. I’ve seen a lot in my life but my 1st superbowl was UNBELIEVABLE. The passion that the Amercans have for this event is incredible. The spectacle was great but the result was disappointing for us. Can you believe I got to watch the game with Gary Ablett Snr & Jnr by my side!!! There were a few other ex-Geelong players with us that I didn’t know as well. I’ll tell you this when those boys are overseas….they play hard!!!
I’ll be back in Oz in a couple of days. I’m very tired. These last 2 trips to the states have been exhausting, but all worth it.
It sounds like I missed some great tennis.

What time is it in the US…..what city were you in?

You have 2 mins to reply or we will know you are googling the answers to these questions.

Sorry tigress but I don’t need to play your silly games.
I hope you found suitable digs for Mardi Gras.

I’m staying at your place (in redfern) as you will no doubt be out of the country or on your own float……
