Paid Maternity Leave
Why is this even on the discussion board??
Did Australia suddenly win Gold Lotto or something? Where did this country come up with the cash to support such a pipe dream?
Next thing you know they will be demanding that tertiary education should be taxpayer funded. Oh hang on that’s right they tried that.
There are some things that I believe should be covered by the taxpayer.
- Medical care for all
- Basic surgical care for all without a long wait
- Basic dental care for all without long year wait
- Basic accommodation for those who have hit hard times.
- A good quality of education through to the end of high school for all
Surely paid maternity leave is a luxury, not a basic need. Why is it required?
So a bunch of show pony husband and wife types can continue to pay for their overly inflated home loans that they trapped themselves in? Surely the cost and burden of adding children to their budget is not something we all should be forced to absorb.
My understanding of the pro argument is that Australia need more young people because our population is aging, correct me if I am wrong. To this end the taxpayer will pay mothers (or fathers in this crazy world) to spit out kids and stay home for an extended period of time.
So, instead of investing more funds into making sure the public school that these prospective children will attend is of high quality the government is considering paying parents money to stay home on there selfish fat arses to watch Ophra or Dr Phil, sip coffee whilst lamenting rising interest rates.
I personally wish we could travel back in time and disallow the second income solution illusion (or for the so called educated, Women’s liberation) to ever occur. Houses would be cheaper, childcare centres would be in less demand and parents would have the ability to raise their children with one parent looking after the children and home.
Luxury or Necessity, what are your thoughts?

It’s all part of the conspiracy home boy………..who clips the ticket everytime prices go up, people earn more money etc etc. Tax, GST, stamp duty……….
Everything except basic needs is a luxury, it’s just that as we get richer it seems plasma TV’s are now a necessity.
Also if you look at the lifetime value of a child to the government I think you would find that if you live to 70 yo then the government have more than made the money back that they paid to the parents for the baby bonus and the maternity leave etc.
Also why would you invest in schools when parents are prepared to pay for their kids to go to private schools, this forces mothers back into the workforce and surprise surprise they get the tax form the extra income…….
I think you are being a little naive in your analysis of this topic.
So you don’t have to agree with it but if you were in government and it was your money what would you do?
For a capitalist pig you are being a little socialist don’t you think.
The tiger snarls and shows his teeth
I guess again it’s all in the name of profiteering and increasing the population of our country. I think some places even offer paid Paternity leave.
If thats what you have to offer to keep good staff then thats what you need to offer.
Other things to consider for the government to introduce.
1. tax free beer
2. tax free fuel
3. meter maids in every city.
4. the official recognition of steak and blow job day held each year on march 14 (exactly 1 month after valentines day)

Finally, some decent ideas. Gold, gold, gold and more gold.
If the above 4 things occur then maternity leave for all, here here.

The tiger is toothless……..
Hey SJ, 1958 called, they said they’re sick of you there so why don’t you join the rest of us in the year 2008.
You need to ditch the old day rhetoric champ and realise that we need to do more to encourage growth in this country. Paid Maternity leave is not a luxury, there is a real need for it so it should be on the adgenda.

Well, If you blokes all agree with Rob B (as above) then I know I am right!!
SJ
I can understand why this is an issue for YOU SJ given your status in life! IF, and that is a BIIIIIIIIG IF, you ever find a partner and or get married and have a child (God forbid) your views would change significnatly. My company in fact pays 1 week Paternity Leave which I have been thankfull for. Welcome to the new millenium Champ!
——————–
You may be right but I doubt my views will change like a windsock. A big thank you for your presumptions on my personal life.
If it wasn’t for the improvement in air quality I doubt your company would know the difference if you were on paternity leave for 6 months!!!
SJ
I’ll be getting 3 weeks paternity leave in July, so I’m all in favour of paid paternity & maternity leave, not to mention the plasma err baby bonus!
I’ve never really understood the aging population thing though. If we have a spike in the birth rate now, won’t that just create another aging population problem down the track?
————-
I guess it would be hard to refuse paternity leave on principle. I would appreciate it if you would try.
As for the aging population thing, its the chicken and the egg all over again. I am the man to solve the problem anyway. All those selfish lesbians should call me in for some crop planting. Hot ones only should apply.
