Plasma V LCD

Published by SJ at 5:11 am under General

I have decided to take the plunge into the flat panel screen television world. The pricing seems to be simular for both and I think I should go for the HD 1080 stuff that is the latest and greatest talk.

I understand that each type of TV is better for certain types of viewing so here is a list of gear I like.

Car racing
Horse racing
Football
Combat sports
Normal TV shows and movie.

I will also be playing a game console through the unit so I through myself at your mercy and ask

What is the better TV for me?

Any experiences or advice you can provide will be appreciated.

    Shirvo,

LCD would be the option if you are going to play a console on it. Am led to believe that the Plasma does not like the pausing of games as it burns an image on the screen..

I think screen size has a bit to do with it too. If you want BIG, has to be plasma. Anything under 50 inches i’m pretty sure can be either LCD or plasma.

I’m pretty sure Foxtel broadcasts in standard def only, not sure what their plans are for the future re: High def. Picture quality on fox compared to some of the other free to air channels is a bit poor.

For gaming i’d check which ones handle fast moving objects well. Some of the cheapies will go all pixelated. What do they call that?…refresh/response rate or something??

    Other points of interest
get a built in tuner, pain in the bum if you don’t. most tvs now should have this though
get as many hdmi ports as you can – cables are expensive but pic quality is much better
how do you connect the games console to tv? easy plug in front or fumble around the back of tv like a niff?

i’m sure there are heaps of other things to consider too that escape me right now

Agree with Velco, make sure it has a built in High Def tuner. HDMI ports are a necessity if connecting a blue ray/dvd player recorder. make sure it has a digital optical connection for 5.1 surround when connecting to your nice new amp that you will get as well.

Here is a reasonably priced amp which is the same as mine.. http://www.excelhifi.com.au/prod508.htm

In my opinion, plasma is still better value for money for what you want. No doubt RAT would disagree since he’s got the latest LCD blurravison bravia.
Plasma burn on the newer LCDs is apparently not much of an issue.

I am looking at the next step in this technology and the release of PlayTV through PS3 hopefully later this year. This will allow for the PS3 to record digital TV and store it on the PS3′s drive or an external usb drive.
My personal opinion is obviously LCD. Those with a glare from water nearby would agree.
Extended game play with the gaming console and the Full HD experience through games and Blu-Ray movies is great on the LCD. A good LCD is as clear as a cheap Plasma.
I was so excited when the previous poster had got his Plasma and we decided to test the graphics of the Wii. Great definition through the games while we watched ina rendered 1/2 screen. Reminiscent of my first game console DONKEY KONG in 1980.
Then when we stopped and the Ghosting of the “Medal of Honour” logo was a sight to behold.
this was after 15 minutes of game play.
Obviously this was about 5 minutes longer than that particular owner ever sits on the game before being “Stuck” on the level while “Clocking it”.

To answer SIDDLES you connect the HDMI from the rear of the TV direct into the PS3 or games console, then from it to the AMP. Wii dont have HDMI. Not sure if XBOX do.
Then depending on the amp the optical cable from the amp into the rear of the PS3.
Some amps use a “passthrough” HDMI and can need the optical cable to operate clearly.
Given the TV doesn’t operate its mounted speakers in 51. or 7.1 surround the way to get this is via the HDMI or HDMI and OPTICAL combo.

PS3 is still the best value for money Bluray player on the market. Just make sure you get the extended warranty.

    Krusty, how’s the trailerpark?

Rat Wane, I thought we got rid of you. Please find another site to peddle your ill-informed technical nonsense.

Megabevan, nice to see you back & posting your pointless drivel again, albeit a clever yet sarcastic retort or 2!
