State of the State
We were hit with some interesting thoughts in my recent blog how we do things. I thought we should discuss some of the ideas you were spitting out like goobers on a 3 km jog.
Apparently and overwhelming percentage of you think the states should be abolished and this country should be dropped back to a council / national government set up as is prevalent in many other countries.
My concern is that things like hospitals, police forces etc are to big to be run by a local council and to small to be run by a national government. Qld Police can’t afford a helicopter now heaven knows how they would do this on a council by council basis. I would also have concerns having hospitals run at a national level, its hard enough for our politicians to understand the situation at the moment, imagine including another 2 –3 levels of ‘health department management’ impairing the message from nurse / doctor to health minister. The last thing the health system needs is more management.
In my humble opinion of course….
What about you, what advantages can you see by nationalising or regionalising the above examples, or other examples as you see fit?

I could run this country on my own!
yes you could dipshit….but you would be shot and there would be so many people with the motivation they’d never find the shooter on the grassy knoll who pulled the trigger.
Blogs around the world would be rejoicing.
Nice to see you were up at a sparrows fart this morning getting the shop ready for pre Christmas trade. 4:52am…..nice!
IASM, I thought to get the cheap produce you went to the markets at closing not opening? For such a financially astute man this seems like you are leaving valuable profits on the table by not buying at the best price?
SJ, I think this is the reason why we have 3 levels of government. I think it need to be more like a business org structure.
CEO = prime minister (elected) has the heads of all the states (elected State Managers) reporting to them who then has the heads of each council (elected Area Managers) reporting to them.
So in actual fact you don’t really reduce the number of people only bring in all the Budgeting into one area. Just like a national business.
Also you would reduce admin costs by streamlining IT, Tax/duty collection etc into one big back office.
Too easy. Actually, if you wanted to run for PM then this, reducing corporate greed and nation building projects would be a pretty good platform to win a few votes.
And here is a proactive F*ck Off to anyone that might be thinking of bagging out my longer than normal post.
I agree with Tiger, this sounds like it would be the best solution. But the PM would be pretty busy that is for sure mate.
The PM should be busy, he’s running the country. Most CEOs only sleep 4 hours a night.
Hey SJ, maybe you should be a CEO?
I tried to think of a good system to manage the country, including considering what great companies like ABC, ENRON and HIH have accomplished. I couldnt think of a foolproof way where people dont just look after themselves. I guess performance based pay would be a good start – although even that can be counter productive. At work managers get a bonus for spending as little money as possible in their respective areas, with little regard to what that does downstream. For instance if (and we are talking about a coal mine here) the drill and blast team want to save money, they use less explosives which leaves the ground almost impossible to dig. The excavation team then has to spend heaps of money on replacement buckets due to the hard digging. They lose their bonus.
Frankly I think we need a hardass to whip us into shape, stop wasting our money and force public servants to do just that, serve the public.
Good job with your commentary on this topic guys. This is a better standard than I have come to expect from you.
Velcrap, you gave me another laugh at your lack of intelligence. Primary school children can understand the mind-blowing concept of day light saving but you just don’t get it!!
Velcro, who do suggest for PM?
We need at list of hard arses?
