Support the team

Published by SJ at 5:33 am under General

I was lucky enough to receive tickets to the Tri Nations final between Australia and NZ on Saturday night. The package included pre game drinks and dinner at the XXXX brewery which was most enjoyable especially with the entertainment provided by MC David Fordham and comedian Paul Martell. A comedian who can do excellent impressions always gets a thumbs up from me. Dinner as per normal in these situations was pretty ordinary but the beer was the ‘right price’ which more than makes up for it.

After dinner we were given our tickets and made the trek from the brewery to Lang Park. Once in the stadium we had just enough time to purchase a few beers and sit down to watch the anthems. The Haka is always entertaining only to be topped in comedy stakes by the singing of Waltzing Matilda, a tradition that makes no sense to me whatsoever.

The game was ok and pretty exciting during the parts we were winning but in the end we copped a pizzling, luckily I was able to secure Australia with a 4.5 point handicap so I wasn’t totally disappointed. I was surprised at the cheering from the 52000 who packed out the stadium. I am not sure if it was the section I was in or whether it was my imagination but the Kiwis drowned out the Aussies in the cheering stakes. I would be interested in your thoughts and impressions on this if you saw the game but it was very noticeable to me.

After the game I made a quick escape back to the brewery for, well, a few more brews, at the right price of course.

All in all not a bad Saturday night. Oh, almost forgot, my appologies to about 30 pogs who walked through the Caxton in the hours from 11:30 till 2. When I ask you about the weather I would expect almost any reaction other than the typical rolling of the eyes you all seemed intent on providing. Perhaps if I asked you about your shoes you would have been more receptive……

Is there a moral to this story?

Brisbane was jam packed with Kiwis over the weekend, but that goes hand in hand with rugby. Rugby fans are diehard tragics and follow their team everywhere. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy the last few Bledisloe cups in NZ ‘at the right price’ and I was just one of the thousands of true Australian rugby tragics. I love the game, but certainly wouldn’t have paid money to watch your team cop a hiding like we do. I guess the All Blacks are a little more confident about their team at the moment.

You’ve got to hand it to the All Blacks. They certainly are the best team in the world…………in between world cups!

Agree with your thoughts on Waltzing Matilda. Every time i hear it at a rugby game it just stinks of a stupid afterthought by Mr True Blue John Williamson that doesn’t come close to the Hakka. My personal preference is for the traditional Ka mate, Ka mate Hakka, not the one they did Saturday night…..but i love them all

I should have included a question mark.

No other moral champ, just a long pointless series of events with no point. You know, sort of like your life.

Shoes mate you should always mention their shoes…. they spend half their lives looking for the right shade of black before purchasing a pair 1 size too small and end the night bare foot carrying them around in their hand.
You should also drop names like Steve Madden and Jimmy Choo just so you seem like you care.
As for the rugby ra ra bloodly ra ZZZzzzz…

The Australians played very badly. Their kicking game was woeful and in the end the better team won. I have seen that Paul Martell at a corporate function before one of the best cimics I have ever seen.

You are kiding Key. Womens toilets is the greatest spot in the world to win on. You are speaking to a marster here.

The game was depresing even when in front i didn’t think we looked like wining.

SJ – I too was at the game, with dinner, tickets and beverages at the “right price”.

As a wallabies supporter the result and apart from before and after half time, the game was disapponting. For the first time I agree with Rob B – The kicking game by Australia (Giteau) was woeful. Surely the million dollar man can learn to find touch when kicking for the sideline and learn how to put up a mid field bomb that goes further than 10 metres. It was “BASIC” schoolboy skills that went missing.

The teams were actually quite similar, but the hats must go off to the Kiwi fans, all of who turned up dressed in black. They know how to support their team. The wallaby supporters were embarrassing.

PS Is Jethro Rambo?? What about your line when you waited for them at the toilets – Your eyes are like diamonds, over clear crystal waters, in the still of the night???

I missed the game, we have a guest and they wanted to watch that stupid game that was on Ch 10. I had recorded the Rugby but now that you have given away who has won, I will not bother watching it. PS I have not watched the F1 either, don’t give away that result.

SJ, you are a niff. The singing of Waltzing Matilda before the game is something I always find very enjoyable. Don’t try to compare it with the haka, just enjoy it for what it is – a traditional Aussie song that gets the crowd vocally involved and behind their team.
