The fires

Published by SJ at 9:11 pm under General

I don’t understand the continuing problem of people who apparently deliberately light fires in high alert conditions. It seems that every time a bush fire occurs the media state that “it is believed that the fire was deliberately lit”. This always leads me to the vision of some niffer pulling up on the side of the road, grabbing a lighter or matches, lighting up a tuft of grass and driving off.

Is this an accurate picture of the meaning of deliberately lit? Or is it people who are starting fires to burn off some rubbish around their house and it gets out of control and spreads?

I have a suspicion that it is the first reason, which is just horrendous.

What I would like changed is that media outlets are not allowed to report that fires are deliberately lit without having first hand knowledge of it. I have a feeling that the confirmation to firebugs that other firebugs are lighting fires and having a merry old time doing it, can be enough to spur others on to do it themselves. Sort of a green light to carnage. It would seem unlikely to me that these separate firebugs all have the same idea at the same time.

One thing is for sure these people should be strung up by their starboard testicle, in my opinion.

I reckon they should shoot these pricks on site. If you see someone at the side of the road lighting fires you should be legally clear to run the bastard down!! Tough but would save a lot of hardship.

I can’t believe anybody is doing this on purpose but if the media are reporting it its pretty much truth. There are existing laws to stop people from this behaviour, maybe it is time to review punishments for it as they are obviously not persuasive enough. Capital punishment is not an option.

Due to the horrific nature of the fires I will ignore Rob B’s comment on the media and truth.

The whole thing is sickening and makes it worse if someone did this on purpose. I have always thought capital punishment is too humane………

This is blody terible. i am shocked that anyone could do such a thing. If they can find out who is done it I reckon they should change the laws like they did with 9-11 and give them maximum penatly.

I’m with Trent, no punishment is harsh enough for these pricks. Rob B, you’re a naive twit and a soft do-gooder to top it off. Journalists are bottom-feeding ambulance chasering liars and capital punishment is too good for these arseholes starting fires.

TRAGEDY! Absolutely disgraceful behaviour if it is proven that these fires were deliberately lit. They deserve to have the book thrown at them.

It appears that policies made in the past will need to be overhauled to prevent the catastrophic loss of lives when this type of event occurs again
