The weekend round up
A pretty good weekend in sport yet again.
Geoff Ogilvy played a solid final round to wrap up the Australian PGA championship yesterday afternoon. A more solid closing few holes I don’t easily recall. His drives were tremendous and shot selections into the greens were precise and risk free. His poor old playing partner Goggin will not have slept a wink last night with the relentless memories of mistakes made. I agree with one of the commentators suggesting that Goggin’s caddie perhaps should have got in his ear, but in the end its Goggin’s decisions that cost him.
Sets up an interesting market for the Australian open starting in Sydney this week. Ogilvy will have shortened into favourite more than likely but the like of Peter Senior should not be discounted. He has played pretty well in both tournaments and might be worth a little sneaky on.
Mark Skaife ended his V8 racing career on Sunday with much the same result he has achieved in the last couple of seasons. The good thing about it is that he knew his time was up and made the decision to take it like a man. Its one thing to retire when you don’t enjoy it anymore, its another to retire when you still love it but realise you aren’t good enough anymore. The only thing that confuses me is that he needs cash and my understanding is that race car drivers (even in Australia) get paid pretty well, why isn’t he hanging out for the cash?
And in boxing, Manny Pacquiao unequivocally established himself as one of the finest fighters in the world with a victory over Oscar De La Hoya. But he accomplished an even more stunning feat when he not only defeated Oscar De La Hoya but battered him into retirement with a shockingly one-sided victory. De La Hoya, was hammered from pilar to post before his trainer mercifully asked ref to halt the destruction after eight one-sided rounds. Another one of the great boxers has been beaten by the better man and basically forced into retirement. The difference with motorsport and boxing is that one race or fight to long can be deadly…. You wouldn’t necessarily say the same about a couple of cricket tests to many.
Oh, and at the time of writing I have 4 out of my nine leg all up sports bet alive for the weekend. Cheers to Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man U. Kick home NY Giants, NY Jets, Green Bay, New Orleans and the Chicago Bears for me!!

I watched a bit of the gold yesterday as well. How loud where those sicardas?
Pretty good round from Senden I think he is playing well enough at the moment rto have claims for the Australian OPen.
Bad news to the new York giants lost.
It was a nice send off for Mark Skaife. I have listened to a number of interviews with him over the years and he always comes off as a real gentlemen. It’s a shame to lose such a competitor.
De La Hoya was a surprise I thought he would have been a favourite to win this.
Looks like Uncle Tom has bought out HRT as well, should leave Mark debt free going into the future.
