Weekend Hussler
Yes I am a late comer to the band wagon so I just hope there is room left. After equalling Kingston Towns record of 6 Group Ones in a season, something that I only just became aware of, The Hussler dominated a field of champions on Saturday in the Underwood Stakes Group 1 to take his record to 7. For the uninitiated Group Ones are the highest class of horse race available to win and there are only a select few each season so the Husslers ability to equal Kingston Towns record is impressive.
He has put to the sword several worthy challengers in the last few weeks including my pick to beat him Light Fantastic. When all is said and done I am just not sure who can beat him.
My only concern is……..
The times he runs are not all that impressive above anything else in that has gone around in recent time. Sure he has a high cruising speed and can quicken off it but I just think that he either only does just enough to win or what he has done is the best he has. Very impressive I admit, but I am concerned that on their best day some of his competition may be too quick for him.
Don’t take my word for it, go back through his times, do your own thinking.
I am just concerned about the hundreds of thousands of punters who will smash him next start at odds of $1.30 and be devastated when a fast finishing swooper nabs him on the line.
Ahh heck, who am I kidding? I will never back the Hussler as long as I live. I will forever be in a desperate search of a swooper …… yes, it could be a long Spring.
the rules of racing are simple first past the post wins, i agree he does enough to win and win he does, saving the horse for the next event. will win everything he enters except the cup, thats my prediction.
If you want a swooper mate then get on Princess coup in the $2 000 000 group 1 in new zealand this weekend (or maybe its the week after) search for her win last week if you didn’t see it she came from a mile behind in a 1600 meter group 1 and went past them like they were standing still, look out Cox Plate at juicy odds
As an avid Hussler fan I’ll begrudgingly admit there are still minor doubts over his times SJ, but all he can do is beat the fields he is up against. You have to remember that he’s smashed last year’s Caulfield Cup favourite 2 or 3 times already this spring.
I’d also argue that times can be misleading, after all we tried your speed-ratings reports for sometime and decided that they didn’t do the job.

I was going to say that Woody has a good point. If you look at the program they have planned for Weekend Hussler, they wouldn’t like to see him winning by 10 lengths and running race records. If they really expect him to step up to the Cox Plate and potentially one or both Cups then he needs to be managed very carefully.
You NIFF go through most WFA Races and look at sectionals.Due to the horses carring big weights in WFA they are generally slower then handicap events.The Hussler will never be beaten in wfa but we certainly will find out how good he is when he competes in The Cups.If the Melb Cup was wfa The Hussler would brain them.I certainly would not rule him out as champions always find a way to win and the Hussler certainly is a champ!!!! Go you good THING!
I remember I was at the track in Sydney in my late teens watching Kingston Town with a group of mates. I didn’t know much about horseracing but they said it was one of the greatest race horses of all time. If Weekend Hussler has beaten its record it must be a very special horse in my estimation.
